Live Shopping: Stream. Shop. Repeat.

By: Ligita P

Imagine sitting comfortably on your sofa, checking your phone and watching someone demonstrate a product in real-time and being able to ask every question you have, for free, before making a purchase. Welcome to the world of live shopping, an exciting blend of entertainment and instant shopping that is transforming the way we buy.

For Gen X and millennials, this isn’t entirely new. It’s like television shopping channels have caught up with the times. Now, it’s right there on our phones.

What is Live Shopping?

Live shopping is when products are sold through a live video stream, usually hosted on social media or e-commerce platforms.

During the stream, a host (often an influencer or brand representative) shows products, explains their features, answers viewers’ questions in real time, and offers instant purchase options via clickable links or pop-ups. To make it even more appealing, many streams include exclusive discount codes, special offers, and playful interactions like hosts joking around, singing songs, or whispering “secret” promo codes to keep the audience entertained.

It’s this blend of entertainment and convenience that turns a simple sales pitch into an engaging show. The experience is designed to feel like you’re almost testing the product at home, as the host demonstrates it from every angle and answers live questions on the spot.

Why It Works

The beauty of live shopping lies in viewers getting a first-hand look at the product, seeing how it’s used, chit chatting with the seller like they are actually in the shop, but in reality, they are conveniently at home. Platforms are optimised for both sellers and consumers, offering features such as:

  • Real-time product demonstrations
  • Instant answers to viewers’ questions
  • Exclusive stream-only discounts and offers
  • Visibility of how many people have already bought the product
  • Quick and seamless checkout experiences

This interactive environment fosters a personal connection between brands and consumers. The host essentially becomes the face of the brand, creating trust and genuine engagement. Live shopping is an excellent way for companies to connect directly with their audience, transforming passive viewers into active shoppers.

Live Shopping

A Global Phenomenon

While live commerce might feel like a new trend in the West, it’s been very popular in places like China for years. In fact, China’s livestreaming e-commerce market has seen explosive growth.

Taobao Live, Taobao’s livestreaming platform, now contributes $76 billion in GMV (gross merchandise volume) annually, up 90%+ year-over-year. By 2023, the industry generated an incredible $682.5 billion in sales – a meteoric rise from $57.12 billion in 2019. Projections suggest this will reach an eye-watering $1.11 trillion by 2026.

Celebrity partnerships have only accelerated this growth. For example, Kim Kardashian teamed up with Chinese influencer Viya and sold 150,000 bottles of perfume in seconds during a shoppable livestream.

Live Shopping Goes Global

Inspired by China’s success, retailers in Europe and the U.S. are adopting live shopping strategies. Platforms like Instagram, YouTube, Facebook, TikTok, and Amazon have integrated features, catering to a younger, tech-savvy audience. In the UK and Europe, the live commerce format is gaining momentum, with revenue expected to hit £65 million by 2030.

Though still considered a trend in the West, it’s clear that it’s on the path to becoming a go-to way to shop for consumers worldwide, while the combination of higher engagement, impulse-buying triggers, and real-time interaction is a game-changer for retailers.

The Future

Key trends shaping the future of live commerce include personalised experiences, AR/VR integration for virtual try-ons, and the rise of brand-owned live shopping platforms. Whether it’s buying makeup, clothes, sweets, jewellery, household goods, or even booking holidays, this new kind of online shopping is making it all possible and entertaining too.

For example, leading Chinese travel website Mafengwo launched a live streaming platform showing different destinations, literally live walking through cities around the world, and you can book your trip right from the live videos.

Live studios are being built where different brands can come with their products, they even have their own room where the host can go live and showcase the products.
