Video is the king of the internet, but LinkedIn video optimisation has lagged far behind other social media channels when it comes to native video content.

We spotted the latest unheralded LinkedIn video optimisation update today, January 22nd. The improvement will increase interaction with your video posts and the indexing of them inside LinkedIn and no doubt outside too.

Here’s a video of how we optimised a video on The Marketing Optimist LinkedIn business page.

Here’s a rundown of the new additions.

You can now add a title to your video!

While this may seem really obvious, LinkedIn previously didn’t allow you to do this.

Why is this important?

We can’t know for certain yet, but it looks like the update will allow you to see video posts in LinkedIn searches, just like you can already see on Facebook and Google searches.

You can upload a Thumbnail image

Currently, when you upload a video, LinkedIn chooses the image to show before it is played. This means that videos can look pretty odd sometimes.

Why is this important?

By adding your own thumbnail to a video, you can get creative and use the additional image to enhance the message the video contains, improving your click though rate!

Native captions are now available for LinkedIn videos!

Statistically between 80% and 90% of videos are watched with the sound off. Until the new update, captions needed to be added to the source video, using video editing software. The caption file you need to upload is the same format required for captioning YouTube and Facebook videos so you can use any caption files a few times over. We use Rev to generate our video captions.

This provided the user with no flexibility, with captions on at all time. With LinkedIn’s new closed caption option, captions can now be added via LinkedIn, and can be turned on or off by the user, optimising videos for the platform.

Why is this important?

Adding captions is the perfect way to increase the likelihood that your video will be watched and watched for longer! The fact that they can now be added natively, you no longer need to create them using another programme, or link to your captioned YouTube videos, increasing your engagement on LinkedIn.

LinkedIn video optimisation will power-up your video content!

Aided by the additional meta information, the title and the captions, which improve indexing, the update will enable your videos to be found by many more potential customers. So far these video options are only available on the browser version of Linkedin so you can’t apply the new options on the mobile app. Also as LinkedIn tends to stagger the roll out new features, you may not have this option available yet.
