Social media is always changing and it seems that November has seen some major developments.
Twitter announces Fleets
Twitter just announced the global launch of Fleets, basically their equivalent of Stories, which now appears to be part of all the major social media channels – Snapchat, Instagram, Facebook and most recently LinkedIn.
Fleets are similar to Stories. You can share text, respond to tweets, or post videos and photos with overlaid text and, just like everywhere else, the messages disappear after 24 hours.
Will this be taken up by users?
Only time will tell if Fleets are the thing we all needed. Story-like features seem to be the next big thing for all social channels, but they need to be thought through properly. LinkedIn launched stories via the mobile app but the functionality is limited, and the take-up so far seems to be pretty poor.
Is it worth trying Twitter Fleets?
It’s probably worth trying out, as new features get traction on platforms. As with most things, only use it if your brand has a use for it and you can create useful content that fits. If not, then leave it alone. As with all marketing, your marketing strategy should come first not the new tech you can fit it into.
WhatsApp, Facebook and Instagram integrations continue
As Facebook moves to make all their messaging tools connected, they have now added WhatsApp to the collection. We’ve just added a new WhatsApp contact button to our Facebook page. This means that customers can now contact us three ways and we have the opportunity to respond from any of our tools and keep all the messages in on central spot.
LinkedIn adds Stories
LinkedIn have been talking about this for a long time now. Stories have been tested on LinkedIn for a few months and it is now available via the LinkedIn app. In comparison to Stories on Instagram and Facebook it feels like a poor cousin. The way t works is clunky and there’s confusion on where messages end up. We’ve not seen much uptake so far, but it is very early days.
