UTM Campaign Link Builder

Tracking is an essential component of digital marketing, helping marketers to record and analyse how users engage with our online campaigns.

This is a benefit that traditional marketing didn’t afford us, and as a result, we marketers track as much of our work as possible (or as is useful), to ensure we produce measurable results for our clients, and to improve our strategic and creative approaches.

Our UTM link campaign builder helps you create UTM links that are error-free. We automatically replace spaces with dashes, remove capitalisation and commas so that your UTM links are consistent. We’ve also focused on making this user-friendly by adding handy dropdowns that allow you to choose your source and medium easily.

The Marketing Optimist Campaign Link Builder helps ensure your analytics tools can accurately track your marketing efforts across different platforms.

What is Our UTM Builder for?

Our UTM builder makes it quicker and easier to generate trackable links than most prominent UTM tools.

UTM links are a popular way to track how many users have made the journey to a particular page of your website, from a particular link.

Urchin tracking mobile tracking links feature code associated with various UTM parameters, enabling you to track links within Google Analytics to help you identify the campaigns most effective in driving traffic to your website, the most effective landing page, ad, email copy, and much more.

In short, our UTM builder helps to demystify your marketing success, and provide you with the key to detailed transparent reporting, within your existing digital data/analytics tool, of which of your efforts are working the hardest, and which efforts have been ineffective.

When Might You Use UTM Links?

 Email

The content typically found in commercial email marketing is a mixture of on-page (or in-email) content, and links/buttons to website content.

By using our UTM builder to create unique trackable links to hook up to the buttons to website content within your email newsletter, you can track button clicks and analyse the number of users that journeyed from the email to your landing page.

You could also generate multiple UTM links to track how two different emails perform, and how much traffic each drives to a particular website page via the links/buttons in the body of each email.

Organic Social

Strategically considered social media content typically includes a link to a relevant website landing page.

Rather than just reporting on engagement and impressions, you can use UTM links to track and provide transparency around exactly how much website traffic your social media efforts have driven to a particular landing page, across each platform.

This could also be useful to identify if the landing page content needs to be tweaked, if you can show that traffic is being sent to the page but isn’t converting.

You could also create UTM link variations to run tests, for example testing the effectiveness of the same social media copy with different creative, and vice versa.

Social Ads

UTM links have all manner of uses when it comes to social ads. You can use our UTM builder to:

  • Generate multiple UTM links to log and analyse the traffic your ad campaign generates across each of your social platforms.

  • Go more granular, and create additional UTM variations to A/B test the effectiveness of your ad copy and creative across each platform.

  • You can even create further UTM variations, to track how users in the different locations your ads are targeting, are responding to your ad across each platform.

Google Adwords

Generate UTM links to track the success of your google ads, or paid search campaigns.

Alternatively, you could generate multiple UTM variations to test how different landing pages perform against the same ad keywords.

Referral

Transform your PR reporting with UTM links, and track each and every website hit you receive from your hard earned backlinks.

Alternatively, if you’re running influencer campaigns, with multiple influencers sending traffic to the same website landing page, generating unique UTM links for each influencer could help you to clearly identify who is sending the most traffic to the page, and enable you to accurately calculate your ROI.

How Do UTM Links and Our UTM Builder Work?

Then, simply click “Generate UTM link” to see your new UTM URL and copy it to your clipboard. Upon generation, the link will be automatically tracked in your Google Analytics, or whichever data/analytics tool you have connected to your website. It’s as easy as that!

While different link tracking tools ask for different information, our sleek, simple and effective UTM builder uses the following UTM parameters:

  • Link: Add the landing page URL you’d like to track.

  • Medium: Choose “email” to track the link/button clicks within an email newsletter, “Organic Social” for landing page URLs shared in unpaid social posts, “Paid Social” for links shared in social adverts, “Adwords” for your google ads, and “Referral” for PR backlinks.

  • Source: Select “Newsletter” for email mediums, “PR” for referral mediums, and select either “LikedIn”, “Instagram”, “TikTok”, or “Facebook” to select the platform your tracked traffic will be coming from.

  • Campaign Name: Add a clear name, with logical naming conventions, for the campaign you’re tracking. In the UTM link example above, our campaign name was “Mo email oct”, clearly showing us that the link we are tracking, to the blog post on our website, was sent out in the Marketing Optimist Email in October. (That’s clear as day, even without the further clarity provided by the medium and source code)

  • Optional Others (Campaign ID & Term/Paid KeyWords): The final parameters our UTM builder can incorporate into your trackable link is a Campaign ID, should your organisation use a unique identification system, and for adwords projects, the paid keywords used in your campaign.

Then, simply click “Generate UTM link” to see your new UTM URL and copy it to your clipboard. Upon generation, the link will be automatically tracked in your Google Analytics, or whichever data/analytics tool you have connected to your website. It’s as easy as that!

What are some UTM Link Best Practices?

While generating UTM links, you’ll no doubt find yourself making multiple variations of the same link.

To use our earlier example of the UTM link to our blog post that went out in our October newsletter, we would also need multiple similar ones, tracking that same link across multiple social platforms, for organic social posts.

Using the internet’s most prominent UTM builders can be a real headache, requiring you to have the titling consistency of a super genius.

Google’s UTM builder for example, requires you to be highly diligent, and ensure that spacing, capitalisation and punctuation are identical across each link, as failing to to do so would make reporting a messy, unorganised affair.

Our handy, elegant tool takes the pain out of generating UTM links, automatically removing capitalisation, replacing spaces with dashes, and removing any stray punctuation in the UTM parameters you provide, to guarantee consistency and clear reporting.
